Jaundice and Breastfeeding
by Marguerite Herschel, MD, and Lawrence M. Gartner, MD
It's important for those who provide care for newborns to understand the physiology of neonatal jaundice and how fostering the early establishment of frequent and effective breastfeeding may lower the risk of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn. This module emphasizes that while jaundice may be more common and more prolonged in the breastfed baby, it does not necessarily follow that breastfeeding is the sole or primary cause of jaundice. Processes that lead to jaundice, as well as risks and prevention are presented, followed by test questions.
Expires July 2012. Earns 2.5 CERPs and 2.5 CMEs.
